Examining Implementation of a State Mandate to End Remediation in Community Colleges: A Research-Practitioner Partnership

Dr. Federick Ngo, an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Higher Education partners with the Los Angeles Community College District (Deborah Harrington; Co-PI), University of Southern California (Tatiana Melguizo; PI), and the University of Massachusetts Boston (Cheryl Ching; Co-PI)

Assembly Bill 705 was implemented in Fall 2019 in the California Community Colleges to reduce inequities in outcomes by placing the majority of the students directly in college level math and providing students with support. With support from the Spencer Foundation, this research-practitioner project will give us the opportunity to examine together how LACCD colleges are implementing the major structural changes required under AB705. Project goals are to understand sense-making and decision-making across the district, identify strategies and barriers to successful implementation of AB705, and provide an early assessment of whether and how LACCD is achieving the student success goals of AB705.
